Amazingly, this is the 21st recording issued by the first-class dance band. But sadly, it seems that it is to be their last. The Assembly players have been providing music for dancers since 1994, when they were a Scottish ceilidh band, but the last 17 recordings have featured tunes for English country dances. They are, quite simple, one of the best country dance bands I have heard in 50 years of dancing and listening.
This may be their last recording but it is certainly not their least. The disc follows their successful format of providing tip-top strict tempo dance music, on a well-engineered CD, with sleeve notes which include instructions for the dances with references and extra notes. It features dances from English Country Dances: The Fallibroome Collection, originally published in Playford’s The Dancing Master between 1721 and 1826, and collected together and edited by Bernard Bentley in 1962 and 1965.
Buy the disc, invite some friends round (when COVID restrictions lift), roll back the carpet and dance.
